Different Types of Pallet Racking Systems: Drive-In & Drive-Thru Racking

Outfitting your industrial and commercial facility or warehouse with the right equipment is critical to improving your overall operations.

That’s why Applied Handling NW believes that many business owners could benefit from having one of our quality pallet racking systems in place. The only problem, however, is choosing which one will be best for your company’s needs.

In part 2 of our 8-part series on the different types of pallet racking options, we’ll be discussing drive-in or drive-thru racking systems.

What Is A Drive-In or Drive-Thru Racking System?

Are you looking for a high-density storage solution? Then drive-in or drive-thru racking might be an ideal choice for your business.

These pallet racking systems are comprised of uprights and support rails that run through the depths of the system. Pallets are placed conveniently on the support rails and can be loaded 2 – 10 pallets deep. They are loaded and unloaded by forklift operators.

Drive-thru and drive-in racking are some of the most efficient and effective storage options available for commercial locations.

What’s The Difference Between Drive-In Racking And Drive-Thru Racking?

While they sound a lot alike and work similarly, there is a significant difference between drive-in and drive-thru pallet racking systems.

Drive-In Racking

A drive-in racking system has a single entry and exit point. The pallets are loaded and retrieved from the same side, making this a “Last-In-First-Out” LIFO system. This inventory method is an ideal option for slow-moving products that don’t have expiration dates.

Drive-Thru Racking

Drive-thru racking is essentially the opposite of a drive-in racking system. These types of pallet racking systems use separate entry points for loading and retrieval. Although it’s important to note that each entry can be used for either operation.

Drive-thru pallet racks utilize a “First-In-First-Out” FIFO inventory management system making them an excellent choice for faster moving, perishable products.

What Are The Benefits Of Drive-In And Drive-Thru Racking Systems?

At Applied Handling NW, we’ve found that one of the most significant benefits you’ll receive by choosing a drive-thru or drive-in racking system is a better use of the vertical space in your facility.

Each of these pallet racking systems offers maximum cubed space utilization. This allows for floor-to-ceiling storage and reduces the number of traditional aisles needed. Thanks to this greater density storage option, drive-in, and drive-thru racking provides space for up to 75% more pallets than conventional pallet racks, reducing your square footage up to 35%.

These pallet racking systems are also easy-to-assemble and cost-effective, making them a preferred option for many business owners.
